Repression in Jujuy
The following resolution was approved by the meeting of organizations in Milan, Italy, which brought together 19 groups from that country and from around the world. Among his deliberations, the war in Ukraine loomed large.
The undersigned organizations, gathered in the conference of Milan of July 15th and 16th, demand the immediate liberation of the 40 activists jailed this weekend in the Argentine province of Jujuy. The right-wing governor Gerardo Morales is using repression to try to impose a profoundly reactionary constitutional reform, which includes the appropriation of natural resources like lithium for international business agreements and conditions for a greater legal persecution to workers who protest.
The conflict has been going for over a month. The constitutional reform was agreed on by all bosses parties, with the opposition of the Left Front, and is rejected on the streets by a real rebellion, which includes popular assemblies, prolonged roadblocks, an ongoing strike of teachers and miners and permanent demonstrations of the unemployed workers of the piquetero movement and native peoples.
The mass detentions in these last hours, including the violation of university autonomy with the police storming of the National University of Jujuy where comrade Iván Blacutt, militant of Izquierda Socialista was detained are a leap in the level of repression and have led to the response of demonstrations across the country. These repressive actions have had an echo in the neighboring province of Salta, to impose similar repressive legislation, leaving several comrades facing legal cases, among them Marcos Tognollini of the Nuevo Mas. We demand the immediate liberation of all those jailed, the end to all repressive actions, the annulment of the reactionary reform and Morales to leave office.
Together with the end of legal processes against those in struggle all over the country we want to demand particularly the annulment of the sentence against César Arakaki and Daniel Ruiz. Arakaki, a militant of the Partido Obrero and Ruiz, of the PSTU, were sentenced in the first level court, in 2021, to three years and four months and three years of prison respectively, for their participation in the immense demonstration of December 18th, 2017 against the pension reformed promoted by the government of Mauricio Macri. This sentence has the purpose of “teaching a lesson” to all those in struggle. The Appeals Court must define- in the next few days- if it upholds this sentence or not. If they do, Arakaki will be detained and taken to prison to carry out this unfair sentence. We demand the annulment of the sentences and complete absolution for comrades Arakaki and Ruiz.
