Poland: a field of dispute between the US and the European Union

A Polish parastatal organization has presented legal charges against the Argentine newspaper Página / 12 for having published a few months ago a note by Federico Pavlosky (son of famed psychiatrist and theatrical author Eduardo Pavlosky, now deceased), where he picks up the denounce that on July 10th 1941 (a few days after Hitler began his attack on the Soviet Union) in the town of Jechwabne, about 200 kilometers from Warsaw, the capital of Poland, then occupied by the Nazis, half of the Polish population perpetrated a collective murder against the other half of the people of Jewish ascendancy.

Some 1,500 Polish Jews – men, women, including pregnant women, children and the elderly – were beaten, tortured, harassed and finally burned alive by the other 1,500 Polish non-Jewish inhabitants. This before the benevolence of the Nazi authorities, that allowed that the goods of the murdered Jews were distributed between their assassins. This was denounced, in a book that caused a sensation in 2001 ("Neighbors").

Página / 12 has thus become the first global victim of a Polish law that came into force on March 1 of this year, by which will be judged all those who dare to say publicly that sectors of the Polish people participated in some way in the Nazi genocide of 6 million European Jews, half of whom were Polish.

This law that penalizes the crime of opinion (and of investigation and historical revision) is part of a whole escalation that is being carried out by the 'nationalist' and ultra-right-wing Polish government of the Law and Justice party. This government attacked rights such as abortion, took openly xenophobic attitudes against refugees from the Middle East wars and carried out a legal offensive that places virtually all the apparatus of the Justice Power under its direct control.

Clashes

This frames the field of strong clashes that develop between the European Union (EU, led by Germany and France) and the Polish 'nationalist' government that, for example, rejects the refugee-immigrant quotas that, as agreed, would receive each country.

This has led the EU to decide to start the procedure to sanction the Polish government for its "violations of the State of law". Among them could be the limitation or direct cut of the subsidies that Poland receives from the EU: close to 3% of its GDP, equivalent to 50% of public investment.

The answer has been that of a 'nationalist' rhetoric in behalf of the right-wing government that reaches to accuse the German, French and other monopolies of the EU that "for every euro invested in Poland form the EU, 50 cents have returned to Germany , France, Italy or Spain ".

But the central point of the clashes with the EU leadership is in the energy problem, in the gas pipeline that goes from Russia to Germany. The Russian Nord Stream II gas pipeline has been paralyzed for a couple of years by the Polish … and Yankee opposition.

For the gas-duct it is intended to install a pipeline under the Baltic Sea that directly transports Russian gas to Germany, avoiding crossing other countries, mainly Poland. This mega investment has an international consortium formed by the Russian Gazprom with German, French, Austrian and Dutch participation.

But, now, Germany has finally pressed the accelerator to carry out the project and would have the consent of Finland, Sweden and Denmark, through whose territorial waters part of the pipelines would pass.

Against this Poland has held its ground, with the open support of the US and other Eastern European countries, the so-called Visegrad block (V4) – which Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, as well as Poland integrates – which have also been 'bridged 'by the marine pipeline of the Baltic gas-duct.

The Secretary of State of the USA, Tillerson (the same one that comes from interviewing Macri to advance in the blockade and threat of invasion of Venezuela) traveled to Poland to support it against the EU, considering a betrayal to the "energy security" of Poland and all of Europe because it depends on Russian gas.

The US had already sanctioned American companies for being involved in services of this project. But now it has been more forceful. They consider that the Russian-German agreement is a "new pact" Ribbentrop-Molotov, subscribed between Nazis and Stalinists in 1939, which enabled the start of the Second War by Hitler.

At the end of last year, the Polish right-wing government reached an agreement to receive Yankee liquefied gas for five years through the new port of Swinoujswcie, in the Baltic. And Poland built a land gas pipeline to divert the fluid to Lithuania, with views to reaching other countries.

Militarization

In the official acts, the Polish government thanked the presence of American troops in Poland to prevent any attempt of Russian aggression. And Secretary Tillerson greeted that Poland decided to increase its military budget to 2%, "trusting that the US arms companies will play an important role in the process of modernization of the Polish Army" (EFE 27/1).

Of course the protocol tribute he made when visiting the old Auschwitz concentration camp, Tillerson did not say a word against the project – now already sanctioned – to prohibit under penalty of imprisonment to speak of any Polish collaboration with the holocaust of the Jewish people at hands of the Nazis.

As in its time, under the Argentine Videlian military dictatorship, the EU imperialism remembers the "human rights" to pressure the Polish government. In Argentina, the dictatorship made repeat that "Argentines are rights and human", hiding the truth of the fields where 30 thousand militants were exterminated.

The Yankees criticized that Argentina sold grains to Russia, breaking the cereal boycott that imperialism had implemented. In Poland, the prohibition of any historical revisionism is due to the fear of splashing parties and personalities committed to the current regime.
