Statement on the assassination attempt against Cristina Fernández

1. The Partido Obrero (Worker’s Party) condemns the assassination attempt against Vice-president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and demands its immediate clarification. There are fascist groups that act openly in Argentina, endorsed by security forces and the officers of the state.

2. The assassination attempt against Cristina Fernández de Kirchner was preceded by a fascistic campaign that has a strong antilabor and reactionary content, aiming specifically towards the piquetero (unemployed workers) movement and social welfare programs. Its perpetrator, Fernando Andrés Sabag Montiel, had actively participated in this campaign, making public statements in the media. This campaign was promoted by the state at the national and provincial levels and by political figures from both the current government and the opposition.

3. The Partido Obrero condemns that both the endorsement and the refusal to repudiate this assassination attempt by figures such as Patricia Bullrich, Javier Milei, Amalia Granata and Yamil Santoro. They are a reflection of the fascist tendencies that exist within the bosses’ political parties and of the aims of these groups that intend to enact a profound repressive offensive.

4. We condemn the assassination attempt but offer no support to the national government. The demonstrations convened by the government and the executive decision that made September 2nd a holiday do not aim at the clarification of what has happened, but at gathering support for the government and celebrating the image of Cristina Fernández at a time in which the government executes stronger measures of austerity that affect working people, and at a time in which Sergio Massa travels to the United States to surrender national interests at a grand scale in favor of imperialism and the IMF. The stance of the union bureaucracy, that quickly called to demonstrate in favor of the government, is the negative image of their refusal to go on strike or to demonstrate in favor of the demands of the working class.

5. For these reasons, the Partido Obrero is not joining today’s demonstration, and promotes an independent action. From this stance, we condemn the assassination attempt and demand an in-depth investigation on the responsibilities that surround it.
